This is how the communal bathroom and showers at Bourne Scenic Park looked a few short days ago, prior to its demolition. The job was handled by a supervised inmate work crew from the county jail, located on the other side of the Cape Cod Canal.
That’s Joe Brait, the crew chief and obviously someone who knows how to operate heavy equipment, aboard the backhoe used for much of the demolishing. The work at the park, located along the off-Cape side of the canal, will free up funds for the town’s recreation department programs, money that would otherwise been available only by adding to the town’s operating budget. “A win for Bourne and its townspeople either way,” observes county Sheriff Jim Cummings.
Safely out of harm’s way, an inmate begins one of many trips to the demo dumpster, just off camera.
More of the same, two other inmates
The rubble stage is now complete, with building reduced to precisely that.
Meanwhile, a mere quarter mile away and still within the sprawling park, three new buildings now stand. Two of them are pictured here and the third is adjacent but off camera. Inmate crews recently completed these, too, just as they will rebuild the now-demolished bathhouse.
Both the Scenic Park and Gallo Ice Arena (other side of canal, also between the bridges) are overseen by a special Authority created as an extension of local government. As noted, the two entities operate in the black, with what they make after expenses helping to supplement recreation department offerings. Gallo charges users for ice time; Scenic Park charges them to camp; inmate labor has now been utilized at both locations.
