Barnstable Fire Department deputy picked as new Hyannis Chief

HYANNIS – The Hyannis Fire District Board of Commissioners named Barnstable Deputy Fire Chief Peter Burke Thursday night as their new chief.

He’ll take over for Harold Brunelle, who retired from the department last year.

Burke was chosen from a final field of two candidates that included current Hyannis Fire Department Deputy Chief Dean Melanson, who has been serving as the acting chief since Brunelle’s retirement.

The commissioners had whittled down a field of seven to  Burke and Melanson heading into last night’s meeting.

Supporters of Burke said he scored well on his assessment. The commissioners will now work on negotiating a contract with Burke with the hope of having him take the job later this summer.
