Barnstable Police release statement on fatal cruiser vs pedestrian incident

CENTERVILLE
– On Sunday May 28, 2017 at approximately 1:55 a.m., two Barnstable Police patrol cruisers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance involving a woman screaming on Danvers Way in Hyannis. Barnstable cruiser E-231 was responding on Route 28 headed east with all emergency lights and sirens activated. Shortly after passing through the intersection with Phinney’s Lane, a vehicle, also headed east, pulled to the right side of the road to allow the cruiser to pass. As the cruiser passed by the vehicle, it struck a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road. Several witnesses gave statements that confirm these facts. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital and then to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital for treatment.

The pedestrian has been potentially identified, however, we are unable to release his information at this time pending positive identification and notification of his family.

The operator of the patrol cruiser was Barnstable Police Patrol Officer David Heise. Officer Heise is in his second year of employment as a Barnstable Police Officer. He has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The Massachusetts State Police are assisting the Barnstable Police Department by conducting an accident reconstruction investigation and a report is expected to be completed in several weeks.
