Bourne Police get naloxone donation

BOURNE – The Bourne Police Department received a donation this week from Kaléo Pharmaceuticals of EVZIO naloxone auto-injectors from the Richmond, Virginia-based company.

EVZIO is an FDA-approved naloxone product specifically indicated for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose.

Since September of 2015, Bourne Police officers who administered EVZIO to unresponsive patients exhibiting signs of an overdose have had a 94% success rate in reversing the overdose.

That equals approximately 31 lives saved through the prompt administration of EVZIO. An additional 46 lives have been saved using naloxone either by the Bourne Fire Department or family and friends of the patient.

During that time, at least 16 people died in Bourne due to an opioid related overdose where first responders were unable to arrive in time.

Nationally, more than 50,000 Americans died in 2015 from a drug related overdose, surpassing automobile collisions as the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. This was driven largely by the more the nearly 35,000 opioid related overdose deaths.
