YARMOUTH
– Yarmouth Police will cite the driver of a vehicle that crashed into the rear of a school bus Monday afternoon.

A statement said the 54-year-old female operator from Yarmouth Port, who has not been identified, did not recognize and react in time to avoid the collision. She’ll be cited for failing to use care in stopping.

Officials were called to the scene just before 4 p.m. on Station Avenue by the Super Stop & Shop. A Chevy Equinox rear-ended the bus.

Yarmouth Fire declared a Mass Casualty Incident alerting Barnstable County Control that they had a school bus accident with 22 possible patients plus one in the SUV.

After a quick triage it was determined that there were 9 medical patients-8 children and 1 adult (bus driver). All of the injuries appeared to be minor and all were transported as a precaution. Mutual Aid Ambulances from Dennis, Barnstable Village and Hyannis assisted with transport and on scene care.

The bus was from the Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School in South Dennis and the assistant principal was on location assisting. The remaining 13 students were transferred to another bus waiting in the Stop and Shop parking lot. School and bus company staff assisted Fire Personnel in calling the parents so that the non-injured students could be released. By 5:00 PM all of the non-injured students were released to their parents/guardians.
