Updated: Serious injuries reported in Wellfleet crash

WELLFLEET – Wellfleet Police report that on Saturday at approximately 11:04 AM, they were was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Route 6 near the Mobil Gas Station. Wellfleet PD and FD arrived on location and determined it to be a 2 vehicle accident. Vehicle #1 was located partially in the Mobil parking lot and the vegetative barrier adjacent to Route 6. Vehicle #2 was laying on the passenger side partially on the traffic island and the travel lane of Route. 6.

Vehicle 1, a 2017 Toyota Rav4, was operated by a female (over 70 years of age) from Truro, She was taken by ambulance to the Barnstable Airport and flown to a medical facility by MedFlight with life threatening injuries. The passenger in the vehicle, a female from Truro (unknown age), was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries.

Vehicle 2, a 2010 Toyota Rav4, was operated by a female (over 30 years of age) from Wellfleet, who was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries. The female child passenger (approximate age of 8) from Wellfleet, was taken by ambulance to CCH with serious injuries.

No names are being released at this time pending verification and proper notification.

Vehicle 1 & 2 were traveling along Route 6, westbound, heading towards Eastham. Vehicle 1 was reported to have been operating erratically prior to the accident. The exact sequence of events of what the vehicles were doing is still being investigated. The cause of the accident medical, negligence, criminal or other is still being investigated.

Truro and Orleans fire responded mutual aid with ambulances and and an additional fire engine due to fuel leaking from the overturned vehicle. Truro and Eastham Police assisted in detouring traffic around the scene. Wellfleet Police called for the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Crash Reconstruction team to investigate the crash. The Barnstable Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene for photo evidence gathering.

Route 6 was closed for travel for both directions for a period of time. Once the scene was made safe and processed, the westbound lane of Route 6 was coned off allowing single lane of travel around the accident scene. Route 6 was returned to normal traffic flow after approximately 2.5 hours.
