Centerville man arrested and charged in 2012 rape in Marstons Mills

John Dias

HYANNIS – A Centerville man is facing child rape charges in connection with an alleged attack in 2012.

John Dias, 23, was taken into custody Monday after Barnstable Police had set up surveillance near his home.

He’s accused of sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl near Hamblin’s Pond in Marstons Mills on July 1, 2012. Officers who responded to the scene that day found the alleged victim who said she was leaving a bath house at the pond when she was approached by a man who showed a knife.

That person told the girl he would kill her if she attempted to run or scream. After the alleged attack, the suspect fled the scene.

During the past 4 1/2 years, Barnstable Police Detective Valeria Hemmila conducted an extensive follow up investigation and identified Dias as a possible suspect.

DNA recovered from the suspect was sent to the State Police Crime Lab. Barnstable Police said it was returned last month, and reportedly matches Dias.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated rape of a child with force, assault with intent to rape a child, assault with a dangerous weapon, indecent assault and battery of a child and intimidation of a witness.

He was scheduled for arraignment in Barnstable District Court.
