Video: Driver leads police on slow-speed chase after crash

SOUTH DENNIS – Around 9:15 a.m. Thursday a man driving a tradesman’s van led police on a slow-speed chase after striking a vehicle on Mayfair Road. The van lost its left front wheel during the pursuit and came to a stop on Setucket Road near Wager Lane.

The initial crash took place across from 84 Mayfair Road when the eastbound van swerved into the westbound lane and struck a westbound Toyota Venza on the front driver’s side. The driver of the Toyota, traveling alone, was examined by Dennis medics and transported to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the van failed to stop and continued east on Mayfair, traveling primarily in the westbound lane until taking a left onto Dunstable Cross Road. The van then took a left onto Charing Cross Road. The path of the vehicle was plainly marked by gouges in the roadway, dirt and leaves plowed up by the damaged front wheel, and some broken mailboxes. The van lost its left front wheel near 59 Charing Cross Road.

It appears that the vehicle was often traveling on the wrong side of the road. During the chase, police reported that the van was traveling around 30 mph.

The van, bearing the logo of Barber Drywall, eventually made its way out to Setucket Road and came to rest near 199 Setucket Road. The driver was examined by Dennis Fire Department personnel and fitted with a neck collar. He then taken from the vehicle and handcuffed. A Dennis police officer administered a Breathalyzer test to the driver. He was subsequently transported to Cape Cod Hospital.

The Dennis Police Department is investigating the incident.
