House fire on Nantucket causes $100,000 in damage Friday night

NANTUCKET – Nantucket firefighters were on scene with a house fire for four hours Friday night.

The blaze broke out at 36 Meadowview Drive just after 8:30. On arrival, firefighters encountered flames on the outside and inside the home. The occupants had already escaped unharmed.

When crews entered, what was described as smoke explosion happened on the upper floor, causing the ceiling to collapse.

The flames were put out shortly after 9 p.m., but crews remained on scene until after midnight checking for extension, as well as performing overhaul and salvage operations.

One firefighter sustained a minor hand injury.

The cause is under investigation with assistance from the State Fire Marshal.

Fire officials estimated total damage in excess of $100,000.
