MASHPEE – The Kenneth C. Coombs School on Old Barnstable Road was evacuated at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters responding confirmed a strong odor in the building and ordered the evacuation. It was not immediately clear what caused the odor.

The Mashpee Superintendent of Schools office says nothing was found and students and staff were allowed back into the building after it was ventilated.

Principal Paul LeBelle issued the following statement late Wednesday:

I want to start with how pleased and proud I am of our KCC staff’s and students’ actions during today’s evacuation. Everyone exited the building just as efficiently as they have practiced during the year. Though most people thought it was a drill at the time, when we began the relocation process to the Quashnet School, the transition was executed seamlessly. Students exhibited how responsible they were by listening to the adults and walking orderly across the field. Staff supervised all 430 students and safely escorted them into the Quashnet cafeteria. Our instant communication with the Quashnet School prepared them to receive us and provide a rallying spot while we waited to be allowed back into the building.

Though we had a little excitement in our day, I am glad to report that the response of our Mashpee Fire and Police Departments in collaboration with the school department, once again proves it’s great to be in Mashpee.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Paul M. LeBelle, Principal
