Memorial Day marked with ceremonies on Cape Cod

ORLEANS – The rain did not dampen the spirits of those gathered in Orleans Monday to honor those who have fallen defending or nation during war.

Approximately 200 gathered at Memorial Park after the parade starting at Town Cove down Route 28 to the ceremony.

Speakers included Orleans Police Lieutenant Kevin Higgins, Orleans Police Chaplian Rev. Sally Norris, Ret. Navy Sr. Chief Jon Fuller, Ret. Lt. Col and Chaplain US Army Rev. Phil Mitchell, and USMC Col. Paul Bruemmer.

The gathered were encouraged to remember those who paid the ultimate price while defending our country. The “Missing Man” or “Falling Comrade” Table was set and the significance explained by Chief Fuller.

The Police and Fire Honor Guard, Nauset Regional High School Fife & Bugle Corps, along with chorus members participated in the ceremony.

Other ceremonies were held across Cape Cod on Monday, including Falmouth, Mashpee, Hyannis, Dennis and Yarmouth.
