Officer struck by vehicle attempting to flee in Bourne

dunnebethanyBOURNE – Bourne Police report that on Tuesday at approximately 5:40 p.m., Officer Harrington observed a female known to her as Bethany Dunne, 31, of Sagamore Beach, seated in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked at the Gulf gas station at the Bourne South Rotary. Officer Harrington had knowledge that Dunne had outstanding warrants for larceny under $250 and assault and battery on an ambulance crew.

Officer Harrington exited her cruiser, approached Dunne’s vehicle and advised her she was under arrest, and requested she exit the vehicle. Dunne acknowledge the officer’s presence, ignored the command and attempted to flee by placing her vehicle in reverse and accelerating. Officer Harrington attempted to get out of the way, but was struck by the vehicle and pinned between Dunne’s vehicle and her cruiser. While pinned, Officer Harrington was able to reach into the window, hold onto Dunne, and radio for backup. Officer Harrington was eventually able to free herself and remove Dunne from the moving vehicle, and take her into custody. The vehicle Dunne was driving had been previously reported stolen.

In addition to the warrants, Dunne was charged with failing to stop for a police officer, operating after suspension (subsequent offense), operating recklessly to endanger, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (vehicle), resisting arrest and larceny of a motor vehicle. Dunne is due to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court on Wednesday.

Officer Harrington did not appear to be seriously injured.

  1. Something doesn’t fit here. If the officer was pinned between vehicles, how did she manage to reach all the way around to the driver’s door? Grammar error?
    Either way, I’m glad she is ok and the suspect was arrested. Ms. Dunne is in big trouble.
