UPDATE: Driver charged with stolen MV, OUI and leaving the scene of two crashes

EASTHAM
– Eastham Police reports that on Monday at approximately 9:12 PM, they responded to the area of Route 6 and Jackcin Drive for a report of a motor vehicle crash. The reporting party stated that a silver colored SUV had struck an orange Volkswagen Bus and then left the scene. It was reported that the silver SUV traveled onto Aspinet Road and then onto Massasoit Road. The location of the silver SUV was unknown after that point. Eastham Police were unable to locate the silver SUV after searching the area.

While processing the original crash scene and arranging a tow for the Volkswagen Bus, Eastham Police received a report of a roll-over motor vehicle crash in the area of 650 Bridge Road. Initial responding officers located the vehicle, a silver Honda CR-V, in the woods, resting against a fire hydrant. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the officer’s arrival. A witness in the area advised the responding officers
that she had observed a male subject walking, and then running from the crash scene. A K-9 was requested from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to locate the operator of the vehicle and check his well being. The K-9 track lasted for approximately 2 miles but ultimately did not locate the male subject.

Approximately an hour and a half later, the Eastham police Department received a call from a homeowner on Bridge Road reporting that their white box truck had just been stolen out of their driveway. Eastham Police Officers responded to the area and began searching for the vehicle. At the same time, the Orleans Police Department located a white box truck parked in the roadway on Main Street near Mid Cape Home Centers. The vehicle was unoccupied. A check of the license plate on the truck indicated that it was the same vehicle that had just been stolen from Bridge Road in Eastham. A short time after locating the box truck, an individual was located a short distance away on the bike path in Orleans. The subject was identified as Mr. Nathaniel Burnie, 27, of Orleans. After an investigation by Eastham and Orleans Police,
Mr. Burnie was placed under arrest by the Eastham Police Department for the following charges stemming from all of the incidents detailed above:
Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, 2nd Offence
Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident with Property Damage (2 counts)
Failure to Stay Within Marked Lanes

Burnie was transported to the Eastham Police Department for booking and was held overnight without bail. Burnie was arraigned at the Orleans District Court this morning.

The Massachusetts State Police also assisted with this investigation.
