Video: Oil spill management drill held in Harwich



HARWICH
– The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) sponsored a full scale oil spill response training exercise on the Herring River Monday June 12. The exercise included a classroom session, equipment familiarization, and on-water containment boom deployment. Peat Moss was used to simulate oil on the water.

The following agencies were involved in this training: BBarnstable County All Hazards Incident Management Team, MassDEP, Harwich Fire Department, Dennis Fire Department, Harwich Harbormaster, Dennis Harbormaster, Chatham Harbormaster, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department, Barnstable County All Hazards Incident Management Team (BCHIMT), Massachusetss Department of Fire Services, United States Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery.

The objectives of the training are to demonstrate the ability to deploy oil spill equipment utilizing common geographic response plan tactics, assemble a spill response organization utilizing the Incident Command System and demonstrate the ability of effective communication interchangeability between multiple agencies.
