Plane makes emergency landing at Hyannis airport after smoke fills cockpit

HYANNIS – Hyannis firefighters rushed to Barnstable Municipal Airport for an inflight emergency Wednesday evening. Shortly before 6 PM, the pilot of a Cape Air Cessana 402 radioed he had heavy smoke in the cockpit.

The plane was on a scheduled flight from Nantucket to Hyannis with four souls on board. The smoke had begun to dissipate before landing and the plane set down safely and immediately cut its engines on the runway. No injuries were reported.

The passengers were bused to the terminal and the plane towed to a hangar. The incident is under investigation.
