Power lines come down knocking out power for up to 8,000 in Falmouth

FALMOUTH
– Primary power lines came down in Falmouth Thursday afternoon. As a result 8,000 Eversource customers were without power or A/C. The downed wires sparked a small brush fire. It was not clear if high demand because of the near 90 degree temperatures was a factor in the outage. Eversource was able switch around and quickly reduce the outage to about 2,600 customers.

By 6 PM the outage had grown back to 6,666 customers. About 7 PM, Falmouth Police reported that numerous intersections were without operational traffic lights at this time. They’re aware of the issue and crews are responding to correct the problem. Please use caution at the intersections. Also, please refrain from calling the emergency lines to report issues with the traffic lights because callers are tying up all of their emergency lines.

As of 8 PM about 6,000 were still in the dark.

By 8:30 PM the outage was reported down to 242 but a car vs pole crash on Route 28A was just reported (see related story here).
Falmouth Fire Rescue reported that they were responding to numerous simultaneous calls including several outside fires due to an arc in a high voltage line off of Rt 151.

By 9 PM the outage map was showing an uptick to 1,143 customers, likely due to the above car vs pole crash.

By 11 PM the outage had again been reduced to 235 customers.
