Shark sighting and seal remains prompt beach closures in Chatham

CHATHAM – Lighthouse and Andrew Harding’s Beaches in Chatham were temporarily closed to bathers Thursday afternoon following a confirmed a great white shark sighting and the remains of a seal that had been eaten.

Chatham Police issued the advisory mid-afternoon and researchers with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy were in the area at the time.

A picture taken by the team shows a half-eaten seal floating in an area just north of North Beach in the area of Chatham Harbor.

The Conservancy’s Sharktivity app also indicated a confirmed shark sighting in the area.

Great white sharks were also spotted earlier this week off Nauset Beach in Orleans and Nauset Light and Coast Guard Beaches in Eastham.
