Sheriff looking for emergency preparedness volunteers

Sheriff Jim Cummings, standing at left, joins Special Sheriff Jeff Perry at recent CERT graduation. That’s Tim Connolly, seated in center. The program graduate and military veteran is now a deputy sheriff overseeing inmates at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne.

BOURNE – Barnstable County Sheriff James M. Cummings is issuing his favorite annual call for public-spirited volunteers interested in earning certification as a Community Emergency Response Team member.

CERT volunteers are mobilized to assist professional first responders. They have proven especially helpful early on when the response is stretched thin or is still being activated. Teams have also pitched in at road races, festivals, and other non-emergency events on Cape Cod. They often help with traffic and parking control at these venues.

To qualify for CERT you must be at least 16-years-old and willing to attend six weekly training classes.

Classes begin on Thursday, September 14 th and meet consecutive Thursdays thereafter, through October 19th. Meeting time is 6 PM to 8 PM and all sessions will be held at Falmouth Fire & Rescue Headquarters, 399 Main Street, near Falmouth Center.

Being a CERT member is a valued resume credential for anyone starting out in the fast-moving field of emergency management. Those seeking careers in law enforcement or public safety can benefit as well. Retired and semi-retired citizens have become a willing source of candidates, too.

There is no charge for classes and seating is limited to 25. The slots fill quickly and the post-Labor Day start is fast approaching. So sign up now, using this link to access the required paperwork: http://www.bsheriff.net/cert.html

Once completed, the forms can be mailed to Mr. Joseph Gordon, 6000 Sheriff’s Place, Bourne, MA 02532 — or faxed to him there by dialing 508-563-4581. If you’d prefer dealing with someone in person, call Joe at 508-563-4319. He will gladly walk you through the process.
