Sunfish sailor rescued off West Dennis

boatas offshoreboat inshoreWEST DENNIS – A team effort by the Dennis Fire Department, Dennis Harbormaster and Yarmouth Harbormaster resulted in the rescue of a Sunfish sailor about a mile and half off West Dennis Beach Friday evening.

The young man apparently set off from a Dennis Port location for an early evening sail but found himself in trouble in the face of a north wind carrying him out into Nantucket Sound and away from shore. Calls to 911 reported a vessel in distress around 7 p.m. Early reports had the vessel located in several locations until a sharp-eyed bystander at Smuggler’s Beach in Yarmouth pinpointed the location south of the “Rock Pile” off West Dennis Beach.

Dennis Fire and Dennis and Yarmouth Harbormaster boats sped to the location and pulled the sailor, estimated to be in his 20s, out of the water. He was rushed to shore by the Yarmouth Harbormaster and taken to Cape Cod Hospital by the Yarmouth Fire Department as a precaution. He had been in the water for an estimated hour and there was a concern he was suffering from hypothermia.

The Sunfish sailboat was brought to shore in West Dennis.
