VIDEO – Alleged OUI driver arrested a mile away from Harwich crash scene

HARWICH – Police and Fire-Rescue were dispatched to the area of 8 Wendy’s Way around 4:00pm for a report of a truck into a pole with wires down and possible haz-mat spill. Upon arrival, crews found a pole had been sheared off at the base by a pick up truck that had continued onto the opposite side of the street, destroyed a mailbox and ended up in the driveway of a home.

Rescuers were unable to locate the driver and according to neighbors the operator had fled the scene. The male driver of the truck was arrested by Harwich Police a mile away on the bike path and was booked for suspicion of operating under the influence (OUI) and leaving the scene of an accident.

Wires from the pole had dropped close to the ground and the utility company was requested to the scene.

Power was knocked out to the immediate area and the road was closed to through traffic. No Haz-Mat was found and the vehicle was made safe for towing.

Wendy’s Way was expected to remain closed for a period of time, until the pole can be replaced and wires secured.
