Holy moly, can you believe it’s Memorial Day Weekend?! Why it seems like just last week I was shoveling and complaining about the snow. Before we know it, I’ll be complaining about the humidity.

It’s the official beginning of the floodgates opening here on our little spit of land. There will be much merriment and fun to be had by all, so let’s see what kind of shenanigans we can get up to this weekend.

As always—be safe and use common sense when it comes to the water, and to drinking and driving. We want to make sure the whole team stays intact and safe!

Music

There’s a new band in town you should go check out on Saturday night at the Land Ho! located at 38 Main Street, Orleans. VB and the Buzz will have the place rocking from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. It’s a band of local musicians, so come on out and show them your support!

The iconic beach bar, The Beachcomber is opening this weekend! I was down there a couple of weeks ago, and, thanks to winter, it’s closer than ever to the water! They have a great weekend of music, food and drink, so make sure you get yourself down, way down, to Wellfleet to Cahoon Hollow and welcome the season on opening night, Thursday. They will have the Ticks, the Greenheads, and Earth Jr.

If you’d like to step out in Hyannis on Saturday night, slip on your dancing shoes and head to the Island Merchant on Main Street. DJ Ian James Sinett Lee and Paul Rhythmryder will be playing lots of funk, soul and Afrobeat to get you moving. They’ll be spinning from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

If you are head to Provincetown on Sunday make sure to hit the Red Inn which will be featuring the Bert Jackson Quartet playing at brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Red Inn is located at 12 Commercial St.

Charitable Services/Fundraiser

Many of you probably know Sarah Swain as a local rock star. Well she’s a lot more than that. She recently started a non-profit, Cape Wellness Collaborative. This past weekend her Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival raised over $30,000 for the non-profit. The organization provides wellness services, such as massage, Reiki, and chiropractic services to Cape and Islanders undergoing treatment for cancer. Please pass the web address to people you know. Good work, Sarah, thank you for doing so much to help people in our community. The website is capewellnesscollaborative.org.

Neighbors for Nepal is a fundraiser happening at Cape Cod Beer on Friday night. As you are well aware, there was a tragic earthquake in Nepal recently and thousands were killed, and ever more have lost everything. People need medical care, clothing, food, water and more. Local musicians Jim Decatur and Jordan Renzi are donating their time, and Pain D’Avignon and the local Nepalese community are offering up some delicious food. The proceeds from their tip jar and door fee will go to the fundraiser. This was the brainchild of Cape Cod Organic Farms owner, Tim Friary, as a way to help the people of Nepal. Tickets are $20. Cape Cod Beer is located at  1336 Phinney’s Lane, Hyannis.

Flowers and Plants

There is nothing quite as spectacular as the amazing display of color at Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich during their Rhododendron Festival. They have over 100 acres of amazingly gorgeous blooms all blooming right now. Their rhododendrons are famous and are not to be missed. You can visit the grounds daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 67 Grove Street, Sandwich. For more information go to heritagemuseumsandgardens.org.

On May 23 and 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a plant sale at the brand spanking new greenhouse at Nauset Regional Middle School. The students have been working hard planting, watering and caring for these new little plants. You will be able to choose between Proven Winners in 10-inch peat baskets in a veritable rainbow of colors. The middle school is located at 70 Route 28, Orleans.

Parade

The annual Memorial Day Parade in Centerville is happening this Monday, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Main Street in Centerville. It’s not a holiday without a parade!

Art opening

AMP Gallery is hosting its 4th season Grand Opening Reception on Saturday May 23, featuring a multi-media exhibition of new works by Jennie Livingston, Cindy Sherman Bishop, David Macke, Tim McCarthy, and Jicky Schnee. I love Provincetown, and while it’s fun to just go wander around, it’s also nice to have a destination, and there’s nothing like a great gallery opening. There will be an outdoor installation as well by Judy Motzkin. The opening is from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday.

Workout

I was told by the person running this class on Saturday morning if you mention my name, you can get in for free—what a deal! Tricia Duffy at Willy’s Gym  in Orleans is offering a very cool new movement class that uses drumsticks, drums, very cool music and I have no idea what else! I’ve taken her classes before and they’re a blast. It’s for all levels. So go, pound a drum and dance. Then you can eat all the ice cream you want! It’s at 10:30, Willy’s Gym, Old Colony Way, Orleans.
