TV has been an embarrassment of riches over the past few years. With the plethora of great cable shows, streaming fare and the networks stepping up their game, it’s Television’s Golden Age. Football, “Empire,” ‘The Walking Dead’ and “Dancing With The Stars” were top picks according to Nielsen, but what are teenagers on Cape Cod watching? Here’s a list of the top TV shows of 2015 based on viewership and voted on by seniors at Barnstable High School.
10.) “Daredevil” – This original series from Netflix was voted as the 10th most popular show of the year by local teens. “Daredevil” is a live-action take on the Marvel classic comic where Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, fights crime in Hell’s Kitchen as a lawyer by day and as a masked vigilante by night.
9.) “Master of None” – Another Netflix original series claims a top spot, Aziz Ansari’s hilarious hit “Master of None.” This masterfully crafted sitcom follows the life and times of Dev (Ansari), a struggling actor in New York. Dev has a lot of questions and the answers to them will make you laugh, cry, and maybe even ponder life a little. Ansari is the show’s creator/producer in addition to the star. If you loved him in “Parks and Recreation,” then you’ll love him even more in this.
8.) “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” — John Stewart departed “The Daily Show” in 2015 but we can still rely on John Oliver for a hilarious take on the news. Nothing anything against Trevor Noah, but almost every teen I surveyed said they ditched “The Daily Show” for “Last Week Tonight.” It’s the new place to get a cynical, satirical take on current events that still debates the serious issues facing us today.
7.) “Pretty Little Liars” — This teen classic still has a cult following and continues to rake in viewers for ABC Family season after season. Now that we’ve found out who A is, do we know what they want?
6.) “Scream Queens” – Debuting in September, this morbid yet hilarious horror series features big names including Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, and Emma Roberts. Set in the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority, the show’s cynical, sometimes controversial, humor made it a hit with teens.
5.) “Orange is the New Black “ — Having to wait a year for new episodes after binge watching Season Three of this Netflix show is torture. This raunchy dramedy follows the life of prison inmate Piper Chapman and her fellow cell dwellers. This past season expanded on the lives and pasts of characters including Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson, Poussey Washington and Alex Vause, all of whom, let’s face it, are way more interesting than Piper….
4.) “Scandal” – If I were picking the No. 1 show, this would be it. Kerry Washington shines as Olivia Pope, the infamous D.C. “fixer” and now outed presidential mistress. She commands the White House, the president and the screen, making for an exciting romantic drama that leaves you on the edge of your seat week after week.
3.) “Empire” – Easily one of the most talked-about shows of 2015, this soap set in the world of hip-hop music features Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson as Cookie and Terrence Howard as her music-mogul ex-hubby Lucious Lyon. Great stories, great music and loads of drama made it an instant hit for FOX, raking in an estimated 17.7 million viewers weekly.
2.) “The Walking Dead” – With 19.6 million viewers, TWD is No. 1 in a lot of viewers eyes. What’s not to love about hungry zombies roaming a post-apocalyptic world?
1.) “The Big Bang Theory” – CBS’ hit series about a bunch of geeky geniuses doesn’t seem to be in danger of blowing up anytime soon.
