This week I’m coming to you again from Provincetown. Things are waking up at this end of the Cape. Stores are opening, people are returning and there’s lots of buds on everything. Winter is becoming more of a faint memory, and it feels so good to get out and walk, and that’s a wonderful thing indeed.

More venues are opening and that means more fun things to do. So let’s get to it!

Teens

I’m mentioning this a little early because you might need to spend some time preparing for this one. It’s the 2015 Teen Poetry Slam Competition. It’s happening on May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Cape Cod Cultural Arts Center at 307 Main St, South Yarmouth. The slam is open to teens, aged 13 to 19 who are living on the Cape or the Islands. Even if you’re not in school you are welcome. You need to send your name, age, address, email, school and phone number to Lauren Wolk at the Cultural Center, [email protected]. Walk-ins are welcome. There are rules: there is no hate language; props, music and costumes are not permitted. Each poem should be no longer than three minutes, and should performed, not read. Though you can bring notes for prompts. And there are prizes! $100 for the All-Cape Team Slam Champion, $75 for second prize, $50 for third. Go to the website for more info –cultural-center.org. Oh! And prepare two poems! There will be two rounds which will be scored.

Everyone knows that Duct tape is good for everything, but have you ever thought about the creative things you can do with it? The Brewster Ladies Library is hosting an event for kids 10-18 at 3 p.m. on April 23, that will be all about making things with Duct tape. This is a free event and who knows what fun things you will be able to create!

Music

This Saturday night, April 25, Harwich Junior Theatre is presenting, “Gail Loves George,” with singer Gail Porciello singing a collection from the marvelous George Gershwin. The music of Gershwin has a magical way of sending you to another world full of love and romance. At least it does that for me. This is a one-time show, and the show is at 8:00 p.m. For tickets go to hjtcapecod.org.

I keep hearing about the Spire Center for Performing Arts in Plymouth, and will have to venture there soon. It’s kind of fun to get over the bridge—and this is super close! This Saturday, April 25, a Cape Cod singer and songwriter, Jordan Renzi is going to be opening for another singer/songwriter, Kerri Powers. Tickets are $15. The Spire Center is located at 25 ½ Court Street, Plymouth.

Earth Day

Earth Day was officially on April 22, but celebrating Earth should be an everyday thing, not just one day a year! So here are a couple of things you can do to help clean up your own world right here on the Cape.

This winter was really hard on our towns and beaches, to that end, there is going to be a Beautify Brewster day this Saturday, April 25, (rain date April 26) starting at 9:30, meeting up at several sites—the Brewster Fire Station, the Council on Aging, Captain’s Golf Course, and Town Hall, and going until 11:30, after which the church will be hosting an appreciation lunch. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.

Yarmouth is also hosting its own clean up day on April 25 as well. Here’s a chance to be a part of cleaning up roads, playgrounds, nature trails and beaches all around the town. Several local organizations will have members volunteering to help pick up all the debris that has collected over the winter. People are to meet at the parking lot of Peter Homer Park, located at 144 Old Townhouse Road South Yarmouth, at 9:00 a.m. to get their assignments.

Natural Beauty Product Class

As long as we’re talking about protecting the Earth, I wanted to mention this very cool trilogy of classes at the Harwich Community Center.  We all know there are a lot of chemicals and things we might not want on our skin and hair, so what if we made our own? On April 27, May 4, and May 18 there will be classes from 6  to 7:30 p.m. which will teach you to make items such as shampoos and body butter. It’s only $35 for all three classes, or you can go to just one or two for $15 each. Make sure to bring a medium sized jar with a cover, a small bowl and a tablespoon to each class. For more information you can go to harwichcommunitycenter.org.
