A Few Lessons Learned During Vacation

As you may or may not know, I am on vacation this week. It wasn’t a totally planned vacation. About a month ago, my ex informed me that our daughter was selected to participate in the New Hampshire Special Olympics. She had booked a vacation prior to that  and hoped I could juggle things so that I could be here which would mean taking a week of my vacation time to do it. At first, I wasn’t thrilled burning an extra week of vacation when I could have easily drove up and a was a bit jealous that my ex wife would be on a Florida vacation that I don’t have the means to pull off.

I learned a few lessons.

It’s not about me.

It’s about the spirit and determination of these wonderful human beings. I watched in awe as my daughter and all the participants gave their all in many events based on their level of skill.

I’ve never seen more smiles in one place in my life. I’ve never seen a staff and volunteers so giving and caring.

I’m sad that my daughters Mom missed it, but also under stood she was where she needed to be. And it wasn’t about me.

It’s been a great 3 days and my kid won 2 gold medals!!!

Now, back to Daddy duty, see you next week!

  1. Funny how the lessons of life are presented to us and bravo to you for taking what seems the road less traveled these days. Seems too many are so concerned with themselves that the big picture becomes blurred to them.. the children are your focus and your ex’s need for a vacation are your concern too, sounds like your head really is screwed on right.
