Well… Obviously the holidays are upon us and that means it’s time to have friends over for some holiday cheer. The question is will they eat all the ethnic foods I grew up on?
I am Armenian and my mom taught me how to make some wonderful foods like “cheese boreg” which is fillo dough filled with various cheeses… It is so tasty! Everyone I know could eat least 6 of them!
I always found it funny that so many people talk about how they love eating “Hummos”… well, I have been eating hummus since I was 5 years old. It was a staple in my house and my mother always made it herself. She would never buy it. There was always a can of chickpeas “at the ready”!
I remember when I was in college I invited my new boyfriend over to my parents house for dinner and I would ask him, “Do you like Armenian Food”? He would say, “I don’t even know what Armenian food is”, which I thought was funny. I said well, we eat “pizza”. Little did he know, what I meant was, we eat “Armenian Pizza” which is called “Lamejun”. It’s actually ground lamb with lots of spices on a thin dough.
Some people put yogurt on it and roll it up. I just eat it with cucumbers.
My favorite Armenian dessert is “Paklava” which happens to be layers and layers and layers of fillo dough with walnuts and syrup made in a big pan and cut into diamond shapes. It is delicious!
Well, I do hope all my guests enjoy my homemade ethic foods this season. But if for some reason they don’t it’ll be all the more for me!
