When was the last time you made a mix-tape? (Not just a playlist on your iPod). I mean a stack of songs, about something important in a specific order with a specific message. I find myself creating playlists a lot (occupational side effect). I have to admit, I haven’t made an actual mix-tape in a few years. It was called “Bag-O-Chips Mix” for a friend of mine who claims he’s “not all that and a bag of chips”.
Recently, one of my friends asked me for a list of songs for her wedding. Her request was for a “Top Ten” list of Country songs for a wedding. Since I don’t like to rank songs, I decided to dig into the wall of music and make a mix tape, instead. To paraphrase John Cusack in the movie “High Fidelity” (based on the book by Nick Hornby): “The making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do’s and don’ts. First of all, you’re using someone else’s poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing.”
There are rules. A good mix tape has a beginning, middle and an end. It has highs and lows and maybe a surprise to keep you interested. One song has to flow into the next. If chosen and ordered correctly, you don’t need to explain a single song or why it’s in the mix… They should each fit like chapters in a book. For this mix, I decided to keep the songs contemporary. A second mix may be on the way with classic country songs later on.
Here’s to a Happily Ever After for Leah and John:
In the beginning, you meet someone and you fall in love –OR, as in this story, you reconnect with someone from your high school days:
Tim McGraw: Something Like That
Thompson Square: Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not
You decide you want to spend the rest of your life together:
Hunter Hayes: I Want Crazy
Dixie Chicks: Cowboy Take me Away
Life happens and you have to spend time apart (in this case, a military deployment):
Eli Young Band: Crazy Girl
Eric Church: Wrecking Ball
You get married:
Rascal Flatts: Bless The Broken Road
Faith Hill: This Kiss
You grow old together and live happily ever after:
Kip Moore: Hey Pretty Girl
Just for fun, in case they decide to skip the formal stuff and run away:
Jo Dee Messina: Heads Carolina, Tails California
George Strait: I Got A Car

This is awesome!!! I love that you made it into a mix tape with each step of our life. You nailed it Cat Wilson 🙂
Cat, what a great idea! My husband’s (only) granddaughter will be wearing her cowboy boots when she marries her love from Texas on October 12. Since they met, he’s opened her heart to country. I’m going to make a mix tape based on your suggestions and, from now until late September, listening to 104 (After that, I’ll go back to MY home, WFCC.) Thank you, thank you!
