That Girl’s Blog: Check Your Lemons

Ladies;

Have you seen the latest Facebook “chain letter” message? It reads something like this:

“Hello, can you put a ❤ on your wall, without comment, only a heart, then send this message to your female contacts. After putting one ❤ on the wall of the person who sent you this message. If anyone asks why you have so many hearts on your wall do not answer. It is for women only to remember its the week of breast cancer prevention! ❤ Check your boobies!!
Hold your finger down on the message and hit forward.”

I have received a dozen of these messages in the past week. Have I acted on the request? No Have I forwarded the message to every women I know? No. Have I complained on Facebook about receiving these messages? Maybe.

Putting a symbol with no explanation on  your Facebook wall really serves no purpose. Let’s be honest. It just looks “cute”. And when it comes to our bodies and preventative actions, I don’t want to be cute. I want to be educated and I want to be smart.

Recently I stayed online for several hours with a friend of mine in Delaware who was waiting in a women’s clinic to go in for a biopsy on a small lump her doctor found during a mammogram. This is some scary stuff when you are waiting in a cold brightly lit room wearing a paper place mat with no way to close the back for privacy… And wondering if your entire life and the lives of your loved ones is about to drastically change.

No. Putting a ❤ on my Facebook page was NOT going to make event the teeniest difference for my friend. She needed answers and she needed a friend to continually send her obnoxious and encouraging messages.

There is a different graphic floating through the internet and social media feeds that I think is monumentally more helpful. It was created by a group called Worldwide Breast Cancer as part of their “Know Your Lemons” campaign. Please click the image to have a better look.

This is the most helpful breast cancer graphic I have ever seen! If you are concerned about your own “lemons”, please call your doctor. If you want to help your girlfriends, share this, and explain WHY. Breast cancer is nothing to be coy about!
