That Girl’s Blog: Taking Notes By Hand

Do you know someone who writes on the back of their hand? Yes… Me.

I know it’s  as irksome to some people as the fact that I rarely match my socks.

I have scribbled reminders on the back of my left hand for as long as I can remember. I can remember teachers throughout high school and into college scolding me for my “hand written” reminders.

“Do you want a piece of paper to write that on?”

I do write notes on paper and post-its. I even collect pocket-sized notepads to scribble ideas and meeting and phone numbers. I write things on my wall calendar, too. One of my closest friends even got me these clever paper “Wrist Notes” for Christmas! I keep them tacked up on the wall right here by my computer so I remember where they are!

Here is the problem: I lose the scraps of paper… I forget to turn over the wall calendar on the first day of each month… and I am POSITIVE they have changed the recipe on the glue on Post-Its and they don’t stick like the used to.

Thus, I return to my tried and true handy style of reminders.

We all have our endearing little quirks (some of us have LOTS of endearing little quirks).  Besides, it’s also a clever way to let people know what kind of day I am having. If I am not too busy, I may only have one or two things scribbled on my hand. If I am extremely busy or overwhelmed, I may carry my notes over to both sides of my hand and up the side of my arm.

Yes… I am aware that smartphones have a “reminder” app. BUT… I run the risk of missing a reminder because I often silence my phone when I am on the air or recording in the studio.

Yes… I run the risk of waking up in the morning with a note transferred to the side of my face. If I am lucky, I will catch the ink on my cheek in the morning and quickly take care of whatever it was I forgot the previous day.

While writing this blog, I actually searched  for psychological studies  of people who write on their hands. I was hoping to discover a little known research paper proving that I am, in fact, a creative genius. Alas… there is no such study. I am just your average eccentric adult with so much stuff on my mind it sometimes dribbles out onto my hand.

If you know of some such study, or other creative ways to make sure my “To Do” list gets it’s full attention, I am all ears! Just lemme grab a pen!
