HYANNIS – One of the hallmarks of summer on Cape Cod is the Cape Cod Baseball League, and for fans of America’s favorite past time, the league’s opening day, Wednesday, June 11, is a much-anticipated gift.

The nation’s top collegiate baseball players make up the 10-team league, which runs from tomorrow until mid-August.

This is considered the 130th season of Cape League play, but league historians trace baseball on the Cape all the way back to the 1860s, according to Public Relations Director John Garner.

In tomorrow’s opening night games, Brewster hosts Falmouth at 5, the Gatemen visit the Braves at 6, the defending champion Kettleers open up in Hyannis at 6, Orleans hosts rival Chatham at 7, and Y-D visits Harwich at 7.

Among the highlights for this year’s season, according to league president, Judy Walden Scarafile, is that the league’s batting champion, Kevin Newman from the University of Arizona, is returning this year to the Falmouth Comodores. He hit .375 last year for the Commodores.

Newman was the only freshman in Cape League history to win the batting title last year.

Nine of the Cape League games this year will be telecast nationally by Fox Sports.

The Cotuit Kettleers are the defending league champions.

The Cape League All-Star Game is being held in Bourne’s Doran Park at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, on the same weekend as the Cape Cod Canal 100th Anniversary celebration. The game will be played on Sunday rather than the usual Saturday schedule because of the various events that weekend.

The league has also had some good news on the national level. Major League Baseball League American and National League rookies of the month of May were both recent Cape League players.

Also, 21 Cape League grads were selected in the top two rounds of the Major League Baseball draft this past week, with 13 taken in the first round.
