Marine Biological Laboratory Hosts Friday Evening Lecture on July 3

Woods HoleWOODS HOLE – The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole will be holding another of their Friday Evening Lecture Series tomorrow at the Lillie Auditorium.

Jonathan Gitlin, a Senior Scientist and Director of the Eugene Bell Center at the MBL will be talking about nature in a lecture titled “Life Interrupted: Exploring the World of Extreme Adaptation”.

Confronted with limited oxygen or nutrient availability, numerous organisms demonstrate evolutionarily conserved responses, markedly slowing or arresting fundamental biological processes to achieve a near quiescent physiological state.

Although this unique defense strategy that permits adaptation and survival by “turning down to the pilot light” has been extensively studied for more than a century, the mechanisms determining this extraordinary biological process remain largely unknown.

The lecture will explore the world of extreme adaptation, examining how perturbations in energy homeostasis are tolerated and defining the unique signals that coordinate the sensing of energy status and adaptation to oxygen availability.

Participants will see how this exploration of the extreme offers new insights into vertebrate development and novel therapeutic approaches in human health and disease.

The lecture is free and open to the public and starts at 8 p.m.
