2016 Plymouth Shark Data Released

A great white shark.

PLYMOUTH – The waters off the coast of Plymouth are apparently popular for the local great white shark population.

A tweet by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy highlights new data gathered by acoustic receivers off America’s Hometown showing that sharks have been populating the waters off Manomet Point and Ellisville Harbor.

20 shark detections were reported off of Manomet in 2016, while there were 8 reported off of Ellisville. An acoustic receiver off Gurnet Point picked up five total shark detections.

6 individual sharks were responsible for all the detections.

According to the Old Colony Memorial, the town of Plymouth and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy plan to place the receivers back in the water this year. They were removed from the water in December for the season.
