YARMOUTH – Twenty years ago this June, people from across the Cape gathered at the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School track to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s research into a cure for the disease.
This June 17th and 18th, the 20th Relay For Life at the very same track will take place from 10 a.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.
This year, organizers hope to honor as many original participants as possible, according to event lead Marsha Stout.
“We are reaching out to those participants, teams, and volunteers from the very beginning, and we do plan to honor them with a lap and some other recognition,” Stout said.
Relays are held throughout the world and require participants to form fundraising teams, ensuring one person from each time is running on the track throughout the entire 24 hours.
Cancer survivors will be honored at a complimentary dinner 5 p.m. on Saturday, and loved ones lost to cancer will be remembered at a “luminaria” ceremony at 9 p.m.
There are contests, drawings, and themed laps throughout the Relay.
