NEW BEDFORD – Discover the beauty and spirit of Buzzards Bay at the 24th annual Buzzards Bay Swim in New Bedford and Fairhaven on Saturday, June 24.
The Buzzards Bay Swim features a one-of-a-kind scenic point-to-point course across outer New Bedford Harbor.
Assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and a local safety patrol, swimmers navigate 1.2 miles through the harbor and channel, passing by the iconic Butler Flats Lighthouse and the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier, one of the largest stone structures on the East Coast.
At the thrilling finish, swimmers are welcomed with a beach party featuring a live steel drum band, pancakes cooked to order, gourmet coffee, free massages and local beer.
The Buzzards Bay Swim is a fundraiser for the Buzzards Bay Coalition, a non-profit that works to protect clean water in our region.
The goal of the event is to raise $120,000 and so far, organizers have raised more than $14,600, which is about 12 percent of their goal.
A $25 registration fee and $150 fundraising minimum includes parking, shuttle service, bag check, swim cap, chip timing, snacks, breakfast, beverages, event t-shirt, water bottle, swag bag, live music, free massage, awards, prizes and a hefty bronze finisher’s medal custom made by local artisans.
