WEST BARNSTABLE – Representatives from Cape Cod Community College visited Washington last week to meet with Congressional leaders from the state.

President John Cox led a delegation of college trustees who discussed topics ranging from financial aid issues to federal grants for innovative program development and workforce training.

The school’s delegation was joined by community college presidents and trustees from across the state in the National Legislative Summit for all community colleges.

The delegation met with Congressmen Bill Keating and Joe Kennedy, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and other members of Congress.

The delegation also worked with similar groups from across the county to advocate for support for community college students.

“During our meetings with the state’s Congressional Delegation, we touched on the need for: year-round Pell Grant funding, continued investment in workforce training, reauthorization of the Higher Education Act and Perkins Act, support for the STEM Gateways Act, and continued support for multi-year grant awards, such as Title III and the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant program,” Cox said.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made her first public speech at the summit. She recognized the role and the success of the country’s community colleges and expressed support for the schools and the success of their students.

More than 184,000 students are enrolled in credit and non-credit programs at community colleges in Massachusetts.
