MASHPEE – The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s 96th Annual Powwow kicks off this weekend.
The theme for the three-day event is “Honoring Our Traditions”.
The Powwow is taking place at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds and will include traditional dance and drumming contests, Wampanoag cuisine, as well as artisans and vendors.
“This is always a big weekend around the Cape and the Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow has become a staple for that weekend for visitors to Cape Cod,” said Tribal Vice-Chairman Jesse “Little Doe” Baird.
Fireball will kick-off at dusk on Sundayand is a healing ceremony that offers healing for people who are seriously ill.
The traditional clambake, prepared by The Lady Hawk Singers, will be held on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. and includes lobster, quahogs, clams and corn on the cob.
“It’s important for us to get together to remember where we came from and to remember those traditions,” said Baird
Admission is $15, $10 for children 6-12 years old, as well as elders 65 and over.
Children under the age of 5 get in for free.
