HYANNIS – The popular baby boxes have come to Cape Cod.

A Baby Center in Hyannis began distributing the new baby starter kits on Monday. The boxes double as a bassinet with a custom mattress and fitted sheet.

They are growing in popularity across the country and have been used for 75 years in Finland, which consistently has one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.

“The idea behind the product is to provide safe sleep spaces for infants thereby reducing SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome),” said Robin Heyward, the director of A Baby Center, the diaper bank of Cape Cod and the Islands.

The Baby Box Co. will donate 100 free boxes each month to be distributed by A Baby Center, along with Cape Cod Healthcare’s Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals.

“All the parent or new parent has to do is sit through educational videos that have been created by Cape Cod Healthcare, both Falmouth and Cape Cod Hospitals participated, and it really is just a wonderful thing for our babies in our community,” Heyward said.

The concept is that no other items should be in a babies crib, including stuffed animals, blankets and toys.

“That protects babies from smothering,” Heyward said.

Twenty-four new and expectant mothers registered last week for free boxes, which they were given Monday at the special distribution event, which also provided time to help train new parents.

For more information about the boxes and the services provided by A Baby Center in Hyannis, visit the organization’s website at ababycenter.org.

To register for a free baby box visit babyboxuniversity.com. Once logged in, mothers need to watch the 10-15 minute video from Cape Cod Healthcare and take a quiz.

Once individuals receive a certificate of completion, it can be printed out and brought to the distribution center.
