Airport Gets $138,000 to Seal Parking Apron

HYANNIS – Barnstable Town Council has approved $138,000 to apply Slurry Seal and repaint the Airport terminal aircraft parking apron.

The apron was initially installed in 2010 during the terminal and air traffic control tower construction projects.

But it was reconstructed and expanded in 2014 during the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the taxiway.

In each instance, the apron was sealed and painted in segments, but the $138,000 will fund slurry seal for the entire terminal apron at the airport.

“It keeps the pavement from deteriorating more through the years, they suggest that every 5-7 years you should put some type of sealer on it,” said Assistant Airport Manager Katie Servis.

Town officials say that the initial apron slurry sealing has weathered away from five years of oxidation, snow plowing and equipment use and has been exposed to excessive use throughout the year.

Slurry sealing the apron is expected to preserve the pavement life and prevent the risk of foreign object damage from a deteriorating pavement surface.

“If You put it on when you first put down new pavement it does extend the life, if you put it on old pavement, you might get a couple extra years out of older pavement,” said Airport Manager Bud Breault. “It is expensive, so we don’t do it willy nilly, and you can’t put it on the runway, you can only put it on taxiways, parking aprons and that type of thing.”

After installation of the slurry seal, the apron will be repainted.
