Annual Cape Cod Cares for the Troops Event to Kick Off Sunday

HYANNIS – What’s become a Cape Cod Memorial Day tradition, the 13th annual Troops in the Spotlight event will get underway Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the K-Mart Plaza in Hyannis.

During the 24-hour event, Cape Cod Cares for the Troops will be collecting items and monetary donations for care packages to send to U.S. military personnel overseas, and there will be plenty of activities including:

  • Meet and greet members of our military, and thank them for their service
  • See the Iraq/Afghanistan Honor Wall
  • Send a free video message to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
  • See a large display of military equipment, vehicles and demonstrations
  • Free BBQ lunch
  • Support the Troops Raffle with a chance to win Red Sox tickets
  • Race the National Guard Go-Karts
  • Kids tent with face-painting, arts and crafts, and more

Along with all the activities, military personnel will stand at attention on the stage in one-hour shifts for the full 24 hours, to honor those who have fallen, and those who are still serving overseas.

“It’s a great day, it’s a great family event,” said Michelle DeSilva, Co-Founder of Cape Cod Cares for the Troops. “It’s also a day for us to remember what Memorial Day is all about – that it’s not just about barbeques and beach parties and fun; that there is a real reason behind Memorial Day.”

The organization began in 2005 by a then 12-year-old Dylan DeSilva, who wanted to support our troops by sending weekly care packages. Since then, Dylan has sent more than 25,000 care packages, and has also provided aid to wounded warriors and veterans nationwide.
