Annual “Going Homeless for the Holidays” Event Underway on Cape Cod

stk23556sisBOURNE – The annual Homeless For The Holidays is underway across Cape Cod, with police officers and firefighters volunteering to camp outside in the cold for four and a half days, all in an attempt to raise awareness for homelessness.

This year’s event includes firefighters and police officers from Bourne, Cotuit, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Yarmouth. There are campsites in each of those towns.

“Firefighters and police officers see a lot of things and try to help out, try to do as much as we can. It’s just nice that these other towns are able to help out their communities,” said retired Bourne firefighter Craig Poirier, who started the event in Buzzards Bay 14 years ago.

“I wanted us to do something to get people’s attention around the holiday season,” he said.

Volunteers are accepting donations of clothing, food, toys, and cash to help the homeless.
