HYANNIS – The Housing Assistance Corporation’s annual Big Fix is coming to Falmouth in September and the deadline is approaching for residents interested in receiving assistance to apply.

The Big Fix is a community day of service where volunteers work to make small home repairs and yard cleanups for seniors, veterans and the disabled.

HACs Director of Community Relations and Fundraising Laura Reckford said 12-15 homes will be chosen.

“The ones we choose it’s because they fit the event because it is really just a half day event,” Reckford said. “So we can’t redo an entire home for example. It’s really just for small home and yard projects.”

The deadline for residents to apply is Friday, July 14.

Applications can be picked up at Falmouth Town Hall, the Falmouth Senior Center, any town public libraries or haconcapecod.org.

“It’s really a feel good event. A community building event. A team building event and really helps out people who are in need,” Reckford said.

The Big Fix is in its eighth year with previous events held in Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster, Mashpee, Bourne and Sandwich.

Last year’s event in Brewster saw a record 278 volunteers participate.

Vounteer Coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin said most of the jobs include raking, weeding, pruning bushes, hauling brush and trash.

“Volunteers for the most part don’t need any special skills to participate,” Everett-Patriquin said. “They just need to be able to do work of kind of moderate intensity.”

Individuals interested in volunteering on September 16 can sign up at haconcapecod.org.

The first Big Fix was organized by members of Americorps Cape Cod in Barnstable.

“We always have Americorps members every year who come out for the event so it’s wonderful to maintain that relationship with them through the Big Fix,” Everett-Patriquin said.
