Aquinnah Residents OK Land Purchase

AQUINNAHAQUINNAH – The town of Aquinnah has taken another step in the plan to eventually move the Gay Head Lighthouse due to erosion.

The iconic brick lighthouse sits on a rapidly eroding red clay cliff and is in danger of falling into the sea.

Special Town Meeting voters last night approved the purchase of two properties near the lighthouse.

The amount of $590,000 will be spent to buy that land.

The proposal was one of seven articles considered at last night’s town meeting and needed two-thirds majority to pass. It narrowly met that mark by two votes.
