Artists’ Shanties Could Be Coming to Downtown Sandwich

SANDWICH – A business development group is looking to take an idea from Hyannis Harbor and bring it to downtown Sandwich, to boost tourism and interest in the town.

The group is looking to place three artists’ shanties in locations throughout historic Sandwich Village.

The Sandwich Economic Initiative Corporation (SEIC) hopes to finance the purchase of the shanties with grants from MassDevelopment and/or the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

“Because of the fact that we have so much foot traffic here, with the glass museum and all the historic points of interest in and around downtown Sandwich, it just seems that the shanty concept would be very successful here,” said SEIC President Richard Johnson.

Two of them could be placed in Mill Creek Park and another next door to the Russell’s Corner block on Jarves Street property.

The shanties in Hyannis Harbor feature the works of painters, jewelers and craftsman and is open for the summer season.
