CHATHAM – Great White Shark license plates, sponsored by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) are now available and an online auction is being held for the low numbers.
The state Department of Transportation announced this fall that the non-profit group reached the state’s preorder minimum.
The Conservancy is holding a series of online auctions for low plate numbers 1-99 and the first runs until Friday.
The auction will feature 10 famous Boston sports’ numbers, 4, 8, 9, 12, 14, 33, 34, 45, 77 and 87 and winning bids are tax deductible.
“We focused this one on Boston athletes’ numbers,” said Conservancy Executive Director Cynthia Wigren. “You can get famous Boston athletes like Big Papi or Tom Brady’s number and have that on your car.”
The plates were created exclusively for the Conservancy by marine life artist Paul McPhee and feature a great white shark, two striped bass and a bluefish.
For the online auction, the winning bid is donated to the AWSC for them to use for their education programs and great white shark research.
If registering through MassDOT, the Conservancy receives $28 of the $40 fee for the license plate and after it is renewed for two years, the full $40 is donated.
Wigren said that there has been a lot of interest in the specialty plates.
“We have a lot of people now telling us that they’re seeing them on the road and excited that they have their plate or they’re getting compliments from other people,” said Wigren.
