BOSTON (AP) — The future of several proposed questions for the 2016 state ballot will soon be known.
Organizers of ballot initiatives must submit at least 64,750 certified signatures of registered voters to the Secretary of State’s office by Wednesday to move on to the next phase of their efforts.
The signatures are currently being reviewed by city and town clerks around the state.
Several groups, including one that hopes to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, have already expressed confidence that they have more than enough valid signatures to go forward.
Groups that meet the signature threshold will have their proposals put before the state Legislature. If lawmakers reject or fail to act on the petitions by May 3, organizers must then gather an additional 10,792 signatures to secure a spot on the November ballot.
