Barnstable Completes Shooting Range Paperwork

shooting rangeBARNSTABLE – Town of Barnstable officials completed and turned in paperwork for state environmental officials that could allow the West Barnstable Shooting Range to reopen.

The Environmental Notification Form for the West Barnstable Conservation Area has been submitted to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Town officials signed the form as part of the process necessary to reopen the range.

The range was closed in December 2012 after the town’s insurance carrier realized the shooting range was not covered under the town’s policy. That led to state officials realizing that the range was on land paid for with state conservation funds and protected from certain activities not compatible with passive recreation.

The town is attempting to trade land it owns near the technology park with the shooting range land in order to reopen the range. Neighbors of the range have objected to it being reopened.
