Barnstable Expects to Hear Soon on Emergency Relief Funds

Barnstable DPW snow plowBARNSTABLE – Barnstable will soon know how much money to expect from the state in emergency relief funds.

The federal government sent around $120 million to Massachusetts to be used to cover some expenses associated with Winter Storm Juno in January.

Barnstable submitted claims close to $550,000 for January 26-28, 2015 as allowed by the federal program.

Town Manager Tom Lynch said he doesn’t expect the full claim amount to be returned to the town by the state.

“I’m sure they’ll look at, in terms of how they can allocate the funds equitably across all the cities and towns that experienced costs during the winter storm,” said Lynch.

The town looked at their damage costs, overtime costs and detailed the costs that they had to come up with their claim amount.

“We’re fairly experienced with this reporting process, so right away we start tracking those areas that we had extraordinary expenses in and be sure to submit those,” said Lynch.

Lynch added that he expects to learn the exact amount of funding the town will receive this week.
