HYANNIS – The Town of Barnstable’s conservative and smart budgeting practices are once again receiving national recognition. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) will honor the town with the Distinguished Budget Award for a 15th straight year.

The GFOA reviews four key areas in its independent assessment to mark how well a budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

“These are the principles we try to bring to our budgeting process and to find an independent organization looking at this and finding the conclusion is really quite gratifying,” Barnstable Town Manager Tom Lynch said.

Barnstable received outstanding marks all four categories to receive the award, and the town manager says it’s a testament to Barnstable’s conservative budget approach.

“It helps to have had a conservative budgeting policy in place when times are good and when it went down it kept us in good standing, and when up we still try to maintain that conservative spending policy,” Lynch said.
