Barnstable Police Receive State Grant for Narcan

police02BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable Police Department can now purchase kits of Narcan, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

The state awarded the department $32,000 for the program.

Some of the money will also go toward training, according to Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald.

Barnstable was one of 23 cities and towns across the commonwealth to receive grants from the Department of Public Health.

McDonald said the state did not release details as to how the towns were chosen.

“I’m not sure what the criteria was to make the awards. But if you look since the first of the year up to November first, we had 43 overdoses and I’m sure that came into consideration,” he said.

Macdonald said training will begin soon and the $43,000 Narcan kits will be placed in each of the department’s 64 cruisers.
