BARNSTABLE – The Growth Management Department in Barnstable is retiring its name and rebranding itself as the Planning & Development Department.

The name change reflects the department’s emphasis on comprehensive planning, economic development and addressing the region’s housing challenges.

The renaming was supported by Town Manager Mark Ells and approved by Town Council last month.

“Planning” represents the role the department plays in coordinating a long-term vision for the town’s future and working to implement policies and programs consistent with that community vision.

“Development” covers the department’s economic and community development efforts, including the assistance and outreach to businesses, promotion of affordable and workforce housing, arts and cultural programs and supporting the private sector.

The department is made up of four divisions: Comprehensive Planning, Regulatory Planning, Community Development and Economic Development.

The divisions work together, along with other partners and town departments, to promote comprehensive and sustainable land use and economic strategies to preserve the character of Barnstable’s seven villages and improve the quality of life for residents.
