Bicyclist Struck, Rides on the Roof of a Car in Yarmouth

ypdvertYARMOUTH – A bicyclist went for a wild ride in West Yarmouth Wednesday afternoon.

A vehicle struck a 50-year-old Dennis Port man while he was riding his bicycle on Route 28 near West Yarmouth Road at 3:39 p.m.

The man struck the windshield of the car and rolled onto the roof where he held on for 60 to 70 yards, Yarmouth Police Sgt. Thomas Hennessey said.

The vehicle hopped the sidewalk and struck a tree on Mariner Motor lodge property.

“He flew about 12 to 17 feet and landed on the grass,” said Patrolman Michael Zontini.

Based on witness reports, Zontini said the accident resembled scenes from action movies.

“There were two witnesses that said they will never forget it,” said Zontini.

The bicyclist and the driver were transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Zontini believes the driver the lost control of the vehicle because the windshield was shattered and the bike was caught underneath the front wheels making the car difficult to steer.

Yarmouth Police are still investigating the accident.
